What Are Meta Tags?

Meta tags are snippets of code that go inside the <head> of your HTML page. Search engines and social media platforms read them to understand what your page is about. Here is what each type does:

  • Title tag — The clickable headline shown in Google search results. Keep it under 60 characters.
  • Meta description — The short text shown below the title in search results. Aim for 120–160 characters.
  • Robots tag — Tells Google whether to index your page and follow its links.
  • Canonical tag — Points to the main version of a page when duplicates exist.
  • Open Graph tags — Control how your link looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp.
  • Twitter Card tags — Control how your link looks when shared on Twitter / X.
